What is mono meaning?

Mono, short for mononucleosis, is a viral infection that is typically caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is commonly known as the “kissing disease” because it is spread through saliva and close contact with infected individuals. Mono causes flu-like symptoms, including fatigue, sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and sometimes a rash. Treatment for mono usually involves plenty of rest and fluids, and symptoms typically subside within two to four weeks. While mono can be uncomfortable, it is typically not serious and rarely requires medical attention. However, in rare cases, mono can cause complications such as an enlarged spleen, liver inflammation, or jaundice.
